Moving Files Based on Modified Data Recursively

Hello,

I have a need and scripting challenge for the forum members.

I work for a large engineering firm and we have very large data stores that need to be archived occasionally. I need a script that can start at a top level folder and then recursively move down the folder structure that looks at all the files in each child folder and determines the file with the most recent modified date. Based on the most recent modified date, I would like to move that child folder to an archive folder if the most recent modification occurred over 6 months ago.

If anyone can help I'd sure appreciate it!
 
Luckily, this information is already available to us! strFile contains the path of the out of date file. Therefore, you can pass it to objFSO.GetParentFolderName(strFile) to get the name of the parent folder. Remember, however, that sometimes a subfolder contains no out of date files. Again, this will have to be considered.

Thanks Geates. I made your changes but could use one more small modification. I'm going to paste the code (I know you said not to but I made some changes) as I made the modfication of logging the results to a text file instead of moving the folder (my boss got a little scared of moving folders on a production server). So the script outputs the results to a log file that we can check and then move the folders manually. I've also pasted the log output. As you can see, it lists the first level of subfolders which I dont care about. I just want to know about the folders below the first level. Can you make it just report the 2nd level of subfolders?

The output shows that everything is being logged. Your desired output is to log only those projects that contain an out of date file - not those that don't. All that need to be done is to take away the first else (because we don't care about "empty" folders) and the move the logging within the same if..then (when an out of date file is found)

It is displaying subfolders pretty far down the tree. In the first instanace, F:\CAD\03\M145137\Walker River\dwg

I am looking for, has anything in the M145137 folder been modified in the last 180 days, if so skip, if not log F:\CAD\03\M145137. I want to know which folders below the subfolders on the root have not had any modifications.

Can you change the code to reflect this logic? Thanks again for your help. It is much appreciated.
 
I'm not sure that I understand.

folders below the subfolders on the root
I assume by root you mean strSource (F:\CAD), not the actual root (F:\). So F:\CAD\03\M145137\Walker River\dwg would be "M145137", F:\CAD\33\New Folder\Slope would be "New Folder". With what we have, this would be pretty difficult. However, things can be changed to accommodate for your desires.

The logic you are suggesting is to get the most recent file of all folders and report those that are out of date. If this is the case, the main for..loop and findRecentFile function can be combined to create one recursive function

I must have misunderstood. This is the output I would have expected. Also, as I mentioned before, I don't have a true test environment meeting the criteria so I'm testing by looking at your output.

Are you looking for output that is only 3 levels deep?

Ex.

"F:\CAD\15\M051348"

Yes, I want to look at the third level as that is the individual project level. Has anything under the third level changed in the last 6 months? If so, skip, if not, log.
 
The output you desire IS already in your current output. We can filter through the current results and make sure only those paths that have three backslashes (\) are logged.

Split the path into an array of tokens. If there are 4 tokens (0 - 3), then there must be 3 backlashes and we log the path.

arrTokens = split(strPath, "\")

=>
arrToken[0] = "F:"
arrToken[1] = "CAD"
arrToken[2] = "26"
arrToken[3] = "10810"

As you can see, there are 4 tokens, thus 3 backlashes. The path can then be logged. Implementing this is a breeze.
