Hi,

We have several new disks to build into one of our ageing NT box's, as we are running very low on disk space.

We need to move most of the files from the existing drives to the new drive, while KEEPING the file shares and permission, as these are user shares and re-creating each share would be a logistic impossibility.

I understand you can do this in windows 2000, but unfortunatly we are running NTs4 sp6a on this machine.

Can anyone help?

I Just did this last weekend for my 140 users home directories (moved to another server). I was able to use ARCServe (our backup software) to mve the files to the new machine while holding the NTFS security, but had to go in and re-share each folder. SCopy.exe will help you do the same thing and is found in the NT resource kit. Hope this helps...

you can use the trial version of Hyena ( to copy shares first... Then copy file files with scopy.exe on top of it... works great Peter Van Eeckhoutte
