Moving file shares from Windows to Linux

I am in the process of migrating my Windows file share to a Samba file share. I have Winbind setup to use my NT4 domain to authenticate my users on the Samba file share. The last step is to move the data over the Linux box. The permissions on the Windows file share is a bit messy and I would prefer not having to go though each folder looking at permissions. Is there a tool or script that can help me migrate this data while preserving the permissions? I have tried a product called Secure Copy (Windows based tool) but it assigned permissions to the files based on my logon.

Thanks in Advance for any help

Is your Linux system configured to support Access Control Lists (ACLs)? As far as I know, most Linux systems don't bother with it, as the traditional Unix permissions are usually adequate. If it is, then I believe you can put a setting into smb.conf which will preserve ACLs when copying Windows files to a Linux system via Samba.

However, you might like to ask yourself if the extra overhead of ACLs is really worth it, and whether the traditional Unix permissions system would actually be secure enough.

Tony,

Thanks for the response. No I do not have it turned on at this point. I will go ahead and turn it on and see what happens. Do you know is that a global setting?

Thanks again

If you have the right packages installed, you can then use the "setfacl" command on the Linux machine to attach an ACL to any file. As far as I know, Samba has both global and per-share ACL settings; you would need to check the manual.

That's my understanding of the situation. I'm not speaking from experience as I've never used ACLs with Linux.

Thanks, I'm looking though the manual right now, unfortunately there are a number of parameters about ACL’s so trying to figure out which ones to set is a bit challenging.
