Moving Exchange 2000 Database

I have an old PII running Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000.
This is the member server on our 2 server domain
I also have a RAID server running Windows 2000.
This system is the DC.
I want the RAID server to house the Exchange 2000 database as I need to retire the old PII.
How easy is this ?
What are the steps I must follow ?
Is it as easy as installing Exchange 2000 on the DC and moving the database across ? If so, what do I need to do ?
What are the pitfalls ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

1) You can install Exchange 2000 in the DC (joining existing Exchange org, and in the same administrative group as old Exchnage), then move all mailboxes to this server using "Active Directory Users & Computers".

2) You have to create your connectors on the new server, replicate public folders, and rehome your everything about Exchange to the new server.

3) Then remove the old server.

Hope this would help YOU. Mohamed Aly

There is a slight down side to this method. If you have large databses then using Move Mailbox will loose the Single Instance Storage and you databases may increase.

You could try taking a full backup of the Exchange databases. Take you existing Exchange server off the network. Then build the new one using the same Computer Name, IP, Storage Groups, Database names and locations. Then restore the databases. Once the databases are restored you can them use the Exchange System Manager to move the databses to a different drive on the new server.

Have a look at for some guildlines on doing this. The artice is about restore to a off-line server but the principles are the same.
