My C: drive is full. Event Viewer logs warn me often. I must move the Goldmine folder to our 125 GB mirrored drive, but don't know how to do it without disturbing the access to all files for our users.

Please advise.

Thank you,

JCEJ

what version of GoldMine are you running? What backend? Are you using the standard file structure or do you have something special setup?

It isn't too difficult to move the BCM over to another drive- it's a matter of copying everything over and then changing some file locations. Rehosting the SQL version is a pain though, and should be done by a VAR. Michael Phipps

Versions = GoldMine 4.00.9922, BDE 500 [9/6/1998], Windows NT 4.00.1381 Service Pack 6
SQL Server = Microsoft SQL Server 7.00 - 7.00.623 (Intel X86)
GoldMine EXE = c:\program files\goldmine\gmw4.exe
BDE DLL Files = C:\Program Files\Goldmine\Setup\BdeshareTEMP Directory = c:\tempSystem Files = \\SERVER\goldmineGoldMine Files = MSSQL: Server_GmSales: dbo.
Contact Files = MSSQL: Server_GmMIS: dbo.
Free Disk Space = C: 745 MB
Memory (RAM) = 1047 MB

Thanks for responding. Our actual databases are located on another drive, but the Goldmine directory itself is on C: I have installed 2 SCSI mirrored drives (125 GB each) in the server, and desire to move the full Goldmine directory to the mirrored drive. I'm not sure I understand all questions. Originally we had a 6.5 SQL and later upgraded to SQL 7, but I think everything else was default locations.

It should be as simple as just copying everything up to the new drive. Then you'll need to point the BDE file to the new location (\\SERVER\Goldmine\Setup\Bdeshare\). Worst case you'll need to reinstall the BDE (but only the BDE)from your GM disk to the server.

I've moved ours twice now (ugh, don't ask) and that's the procedure I've used with no problems.

Just to be safe though you may want to run it by frontrange through their email solutions... That's still free I think Michael Phipps

Thank you very much. I actually did send an email to Frontrange this morning, and should hear from them within 48 hours. I will see what they have to say and then report it here, as this may be of interest to other readers.

I wanted to follow up with how the problem was solved. I was not successful with the FrontRange email system, as the technician who answered the email realized that I had enterprise version, which involved SQL and said that he forwarded the question to the 'Enterprise techs' but I never had any further contact from that point. So I opened an event for $35.00 with Frontrange, but I will say that it was well worth the money spent. I had help from an excellent technician, and she walked me through the lengthy process. Turned out to be fairly complicated. Fresh install from the CD that already had Goldmine4.0.9922. Then began testing using an existing test database and got some error messages. Set a time to 'do it all'.. 3:30 I unshared the original folder and had the users log out while I backed up the entire C:\program files\goldmine directory Then backed up the SQL databases from within enterprise manager. Then went to the new drive and copied all the pertinent folders.. everything except common & GMBase, & Demo. Had already copied the License.dbf and the 3 User files and the DataDict (2) and Dict*. (5) Later sorted by type and added all .ini files for users, etc. Attached the existing MSSQL databases, which must be titled exactly the way they are titled in the BDE administrator. I made the G:\program files\goldmine directory shared, and very!! luckily, our login script, etc. used the UNC \\servername\goldmine format so that we did not have to change anything.. the users could access right away using the same shortcuts.. phew!

congrats of a safe move... perhaps you should write it into a FAQ and submit it, get credit for a job well done Michael Phipps

Another useful tip!

Prior Analytics have developed a utility to changed the Linked Documents paths. Which is very useful in server moves.

For example, if you have documents in a path of \\server\documents\ and you move servers and the links becomes incorrect then you can use this utilitity to update just the path, e.g. change it from \\server\documents to \\newserver\documents. The document names will remain intact.

You can download it for free from:
