I just want to move my exchange data drive off its current drive (as it is getting full) to a larger drive in the same machine. Is this possible

Sure thing, just run the Exchange Optimiser and it will allow you to move the data across drives. Naturally you will need to stop all exchange services while you are doing this.

Grenage is correct, except that the Optimizer will stop and start the services itself.

Sorry yes, I meant to imply that Exchange wouldn't be functioning while Optimiser was running.

Ok thanks I am going to try this at about two this afternoon *wink*. Actually I have some things to do tonight and I will add that to my list

In addition to moving of data, exactly what data can this cover? Is it such things as the priv/pub/is/directory and things of that nature. If there are thing I missed can someone tell me all thing I need to look for because I am needing to do the same thing now. I added a larger drive and it is time to move my data.

thanks,
Dom

Thats right. When you run optimiser you get various options of which a few regard if and what data you would like to move, and where to move it.

When we did ours we simply left the main install on the Primary Hard Drive and moved the data. The Exchange optimiser is pretty informative and easy.

Thanks guys just finished it an hour ago (remotely) and it worked like a charm

Surfandsand,

The Optimizer will analyze the free space (disregarding the space used by the databases and log files) and speed of your hard drives and recommend placement of the files based on the results. It will usually place the transaction log files and databases on separate drives. One reason for this is to prevent the logs and databases from competing for disk space. The other is so you don't lose both in the event of a hard drive crash - of course if both drives are on the same physical disk, it won't make any difference.

Is it possible to use the optimizer from a command line or VB to schedule a backup?
