Moving accounts from Exch2000 to Exch2003

Good evening from Wisconsin,

I am responsible for migrating a client's existing mail server running Exchange 2000 on Windows 2000 to a new server running Exchange 2003 on Windows Server 2003. And when it comes to working with and migrating Exchange servers, I am a noob so please be nice. =)

I am at the point now where I am ready to migrate some working test accounts I have created to ensure proper mail flow on the new box, and I am planning the migration using the two-step move mailbox method.

I can move the mailboxes from the old server into PSTs on the new server, but I can't figure out how to move the accounts themselves. I'm sure this is not a complicated step, but with the Exchange 2003 books I have and the searching I've done online, I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps I'm not searching for the correct terminology.

I would certainly appreciate some insight into what I haven't done or yet need to do.

is your new server a member of the same domain?
if so then no need to recreate or move accounts. you are only moving mailboxes...to do so you can:
1. right-click on user account--> exchange tasks...Move Mailbox
2.use exchange migartion wizard

You can move up to 4 mailboxes at a time, and you can have 4 wizards running simultaneously.

But wait, there's more!!!!

You can schedule the moves for the middle of the night, and you can back out if the move runs too long.

Hi I'm in similar position to Isaac but I need to move mailboxes across domains.

We've recently gone through a merger and are in the process of setting up a new domain. We need to move mail from the old domain (exchange 2000) to the new domain which is exchange 2003.

Any advice appreciated

I'm with lebisol and rliebsch. Use the MOVE wizard. It's the easiest, fastest way.

Don't apologize Bex, we don't know if the OP was moving across domains or not, so the answers may not apply to his situation. Your question was right on target with what was already posted, and I applaud you for using the Search function and posting in an appropriate thread.

Greetings,

I am the OP of the 8/3/06 post, and we moved from Exch2K to Exch2K3 in the same domain. After verifying that mail was flowing in and out of the new box, something I never got around to doing was removing all the references to the old Exch2K server in AD. I'm sure it can be done, but I'm such a noob to AD that I'm concerned I might break something.

When you're done with that, you can remove Exchange from the old box, and you're done.
