Hello, I am moving a Meridian Norstar compact next month and I have a few questions for you experts here.

For 5 extensions/users how many incoming lines do I need, can I just do it with 1 line and maybe 1 back up or 5 lines with the same number.

How do I re-programme the Norstar using the 7310 handset. i.e. change the original incoming telephone number and programme the extensions.

Sorry to sound stupid on these questions, I work mainly with the Alcatel 4400, so I am trying to get my head around this one. All help greatly appreciated.

You will actually be the only one that can answer the question about how many lines are needed since only you can know how busy your people are, extremes are a 5 person system where each person is maiing sales calls (like a call center) you would want 5 lines. on a system where your workers spend 90% or more doing think work as opposed to talking work then you could get away with 1 or 2 lines.

you will find that getting a copy of the installation guide will be a big start in programming. Check around the phone room and you will probably find either the original docs or the original CD that has docs on it. alternatively DOc disks can be found on e-bay.

If this is a working Norstar system and the same people are going to work at the new location, you could just hook the new phone line from telco to the system the same way the old location was hooked up. the number that shows on the phone doesn't effect the way the line will work, it's just a name. the ext's will work the same as the old location.

Thanks for the replies, so basically I am going to order 5 lines, connect them as before. And then just issue one or two of the telephone lines as the main number to call??? And the other 3 lines just used as incoming/outgoing???

If the system is simply being relocated I would just connect it same as it was. Have the phone company move the lines to the new location, however many that may be.

If the customer has asked for more lines, like 5 in the example you provided, you may want to have what is typically called a rollover put on those lines.

This allows you to issue only one phone number to the public but any incoming calls rollover to the other 4 lines as they become busy. Again, this is a service that the phone company can have put on the lines.

You could also have the telco do a busy number study. this will tell you how many times someone called your number and got a busy. this is not a fast report to get back from the telco though (it will take at least a couple of weeks and probably a couple of months)

Your best bet is you know the useage of the current staff. Unlike the 4400 where you have multiple appearances on one phone (where you are using a T1,) it is not the same with the norstar.
