Hey guys,
Had to install a fersh copy of my xp pro on a new MoBo GA-7N400 Pro2. Setup put the OS on my D Drive (2-partition-80 gig WD) , whats the best way to get D back to being my C drive?

Partition magic maybe! backup files on C Drive, then dlete them, then resize drive to 1 partion, then use Drive mapper to fix already installed basic programs on D Drive.

Am I in the right direction or do any of you have a better idea! Lots of files to loose, not so concerned with where OS is really, but would like to get it correct.

Thanks Guys,
Rick Parker

It sounds good but make sure to use at least pqmagic 8.0 if you're using ntfs partition.

how about using Norton Ghost or similar app to clone ur OS to the required drive then format the old one once you've got it working ok. Windows should detect both OS automatically and ask which one you want to boot from until u delete the old one.

Thanks guys, the Ghost and Drive image was also one of my choices as well. matter of fact, would be the easiest with either new versions. I have then too.

Its just that so many files on c drive , original regs and so on, just takes time to choose and make sure I get it all. I cant use the XP on c crive anyway, without going thru setup. ...new mother board.

not concerned about programs, have disk, backsup and so on. I keep my drives all primary and in correct order, most of the time, drive0=C,D - drive1=E,F - and so on.

I thank you guys for the replies, it helps to hear other thoughts from other techies...

See ya,
Rick Parker

Is your OS working ok as is> If so, why go thru all the hassel of moving it? LEave it where it is until you really need to rebuild the OS. Being on your D: drive doesn't really hurt anything. If your really concerned, try to rename the drive letters so that D: is C: and c: is D:. You can do it thru the hd manager or Part. magic, etc.

If you're going to move the installation - backup and reinstall. XP doesn't like its system drive being changed (which is why you can't change it in disk management). There are too many registry and other factors involved - you'd just be building yourself a potentially problematic system. So my advice - stay with D: or backup, wipe & install fresh.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I think I will just leave things alone for now. Nothing wrong with leaving it here for now anyway...will be buying new sata drives soon and go from there.
I always image to my backup on my home net.

The registry was just way to complex for me to take the chance....will have to do a clean install soon anyway.

Thanks again guys,
Rick Parker

I would like to reinforce the point made by wolluf. NEVER use the tool drive mapper in partition magic, I understand exactly what you want to do because I tried to do the same thing and let me tell you it didn't work for me. Have a gander at this thread and you'll see why.

Leave the OS where it is. If you try to shift it to another drive you are asking for trouble. You also will get error messages on boot up that the OS cannot find the MS verification. All your links in desktop and the registry will have to be changed. It is a no win situation. Greetings
