I need to move a server from one domain to another. I have located the white papers on changing the Exchange Server server account name, but it is not clear if I can change it to an account in the other domain.

My plan is to create a new account in the other domain (postmaster), then assign that user to the Exchange Server service account, then remove the exchange server from the old domain and have it join the new domain.

The new domain is a W2K domain running in mixed mode, which is controlled by our corporate office, but I do have a local W2K DC.

Question: Will this work.

Thanks,
Gee Smith

You can't just assign a new account from a different domain to be your service account. SID's won't match, your services won't start, your user authentication would also fail. You can either setup a new exchange server in a new domain, join a site, move the mailboxes and get rid of the old server, use admin program to reassign mailboxes to new user accounts in a new domain or setup a trust and leave a server and user accounts as it is.
Either way practice first.

I have a new server in a different domain, when I install Exchange Server on the new server it asks me if I want to create a new site or join an existing site. I click on join existing site and it prompts me for a server that is running exchange in the existing site. I type in an exchage server netbios name and it comes up with the site information. I click ok and then get a prompt asking for the password of the service account running exchange in the existing site. When I type in the password I get the following error message:

No mapping between account names an security ids was done
Microsoft windows nt id no: 0xc0020534

setup a trust and leave a server and user accounts as it is.

We were taking over by another company and know need to mirgrate to their domain, ... there is a trust set up between the domain, but my domain must come down.

I keep seeing reference to a mircosoft artical "How to move Exchange Server to a New Domain" (KB artical Q151777), but I have not been able to find it anywhere.

Any other thoughts would be appricated.

Thanks,
Gee

1.) Have you tried moving exchange service account to a new domain?
Error message:

No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.
Microsoft Windows NT ID no: 0xc0020534

This error will occur if setup is unable to get the SID for the Microsoft Exchange Service Account. Usually this means that the Windows NT Primary Domain Controller was unavailable and setup was unable to contact any Backup Domain Controllers.

2.) It's possible to receive the following error message when you are running Exchange Server Setup to join a site that is running on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server:

No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.
Microsoft Windows NT
ID no: 0xc0020534

You receive this error after entering the password for the Exchange Server service account.

CAUSE
Exchange Server 5.5 only recognizes account entries in the format of Domain \ Account , not in the Account @ Domain.com format.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, you must change the Log On account for each of the Exchange Server services from the Account @ Domain.com format to the Domain \ Account format. To do so, on the Windows 2000 computer that is running Exchange Server:

Open Services from the Administrative Tools program group.

Double-click on each of the Exchange Server services.

Click the Log On tab.

In the This account field, change the account to the Domain \ Account format.

The domain in the Domain \ Account format is the NetBIOS domain name.

The account must be manually typed in in this format, because Windows 2000 automatically enters the account name in the Account @ Domain.com format.

After you complete the preceding steps, you can complete the installation of Exchange Server 5.5, and join the site successfully.

You can also try this:

In Control Panel, double-click the Services icon.

Click each Exchange Server-related service, and then change the account so that it is formatted as domain name \ service account name .

FYI: I followed MS white paper on HOW TO CHANGE THE MS EXCHANGE SERVER 5.5 SERVICE ACCOUNT.

I changed the service account to one that existed in the new domain (i have a trust set up between the domains). I then removed the server from the existing domain and added it into the new domain.
