Mouse Problems

This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO annoying. So very very annoying.

I'll start with the basics:

My first mouse was the:
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer

My Current mouse is the:
Microsoft Intellimouse Optical

I am running WinXP Pro on:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
786 MB Ram

Here is the problem:
This started happening a few months ago...and ive been trying to work on it myself and i cant figure it out for the life of me. It happened with BOTH mice too. What happens is I will hear the bloop bloop sound that winxp makes when a USB device becomes disconnected. Then 1 second +/- it makes the same bloop bloop again. During that 1 second or so, my mouse beomes non active. The laser light goes off, and comes back on. So basically I will be playing a game online, or cruising the interent, and that will happen and I will have to wait for a few seconds no matter what im doing and wait for it to come back to life. This happens every few minutes...id say about once every 10 - 20 min.

Things ive tried (that i can think of):

Taking my mouse out of the USB port and putting it back in (no effect)

Checking my device manager....but there is something strange about it. Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, I have 3 USB Root Hub, I also have 3 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller. I have tried deleting all but one of each...didnt do a thing.

Ive tried uninstalling the software and just using it...(no effect)

Ive tried reinstallin the mouse software....(no effect)

WHAT IS WRONG!?!? This is one of the most annoying thins in the world. ANY help would be SOOO greatly appreciated. Thx!!

Do you see two mice in device manager, one OK and another not OK?
Try deleting one with the yellow exclamation, then shutdown and reboot and let the pc redetect any installed mice at next bootup.
If there is only one, try deleting all mice (remember to go to View -> Show hidden devices in device manager first) and then reboot and power up.

I have access to an XP box with an NForce2 chipset and haven't had the same problem, but the mouse is a Logitech.

ok ive tried this, there is only one mice in device manager, which seemed fine, deleted it and rebooted, still is playing up, note that my keyboard and modem work perfectly fine in usb port its just the mouse, and i have swapped around ports and that doesnt help. ps2 ports dont work either for the mouse, still is faulty. This is very frustrating esecially coz i play games online. any more help would be greatly appreciated!!

Yep, I havnt fixed it yet either. Im thinking im SOL. I also play online games, such as BF1942, and when your flying an apache, and your mouse freezes...you crash and die....very annoying.

Just a quick thought: Have you got the Microsoft Intellimouse software installed (you will see a mouse icon in the system tray if it is) and configured correctly for the mouse model?

If not, get it from

and see if it makes any difference. It definitely installs updated drivers, because it lets you put in hooks for various extra buttons and the clicking down of the scroll wheel.

Have you checked with VIA to make sure you have their latest driver package?

I also have the same problem. It happens with any USB mice. Dont matter if they are new or old. I have tried all of the above. I have and AMD 2000XP running on an MSI motherboard. I am curious, what Motherboard is everyone else who is having this problem running on? My Motherboard is an MSI K7T266 Pro. The bios Update did jack.... This is really BS. There has to be more of us out there. I have had this problem for over a year now.

yes i tried those microsoft mouse updates, i installled new nforce driver..still hasnt solved the problem..

Here is my solution. You know those USB to PS/2 Adapters that come with several microsft products? I just used one of those. I was tryng to deal with it, but if you play any game at all you will go insane.

hmm b4, my ps2 adapter didnt work..but now it does funnily enough, but only on my old mouse, so i think this ms explorer one is buggered..although both mice dont work stablely in usb ports which is still a problem..but for now im happy

Ok guys... not to make you all sound like noobs but... well... you are.
You see, it is not a software problem. Microsoft intelimoouse explorer AND optical models have 2 things that microsoft have instituted to ensure you keep buying them. One is the LMB clicker, designed to break down within 3 months so it double clicks all the time (this is the only piece of the mouse NOT under warranty... surprise surprise) and the other is the poor cable quality in the mouse.
Where the cable bends INSIDE the mouse case, the flimsy wiring tears itself whislt the insulation is still covering it, so it appears to have nothing wrong with it. When you move the mouse around, the wire will touch for a while, restoring the mouse. After another short while, the wire will again lose contact. Hey presto! more customers. Here is a link to a site that shows you how to fix the problem. I have had BOTH of thes problems before, and I have fixed both aswell. So, cheers to you microsoft! You truly do have no morals!

Dude, with my mouse, i wont be in my room. I can be out watching tv. Mouse not moving an inch. Da-dunk...goes the sound of the mouse, when im not even in there! But when I plug it in to my PS/2 PUFF it goes away. Please explain that. Cuz that doesnt sound like a wire short.

Same here. It does it when it is not in use and works fine with the PS/2 adapters. Im not a Noob thank you very much. I had already checked the wire connection. This has happened with both of my microsoft optical Mice.

I am practically at pro gamer level so this is REALLY critical for me. This happens with both my MX-500 and my Razer Boomslang. I tried all the above including stopping WIA service (windows image acquisition); giving high priority to the mouseware EM_EMEC.exe; changing the mouse; using only the USB port; changing the USB port; using the same USB port that the new drivers were installed with; changing the color of the mousepad (absorbs too much redlight to work); and many other things (like spy searches, trojan-hunter, trojan port sweeps....etc)
I looked at processes running to see what was sucking up the cpu cycles when it hangs and it is "Services.Exe" does this help anyone? It jumps up to almost 100 and right back down to 0 after the "USB device not detected" and a second or two later "USB device detected" chimes. Also, when the hang happens, I notice the entire processes list always disappears for an instant and then refreshes (and ONLY during these usb interruptions). I have not yet looked at any error logs because frankly I lost the guys post that tells where and what to look for. PLEASE HELP.... I am about to tear out what little hair I have left! (ouch) I am heading off now to usbman.com to see what I can find (P4PE motherboard).

Good try ANFPS26 !!!! I came across that services.exe post too.... using XP though. I have to tell you what it was causing the problem...(I THINK). It sort of ties in with several other articles in the MS Database. I had turned off the WIA service (windows image acquistion) but didnt think to unplug my USB scanner... in fact, I didnt even realise it was plugged in (8USB ports.... all over the place). I moved my computer into another room to work on it and only hooked up the keyboard and mouse and VOILA! It worked fine. Still not sure if it was the usb scanner or just the fact that there had been a "sooner that 5 sec USB unplugging and replugging" foul up or another "Unplugging devices and things go bonkers" problem that just never resolved even though updates were done. Maybe the updates just keep it from happening again... but can't "UNDO" the present mess? ANYWAY, techies... BACK TO BASICS... unplug everything except essentials and see it this clears things up. We should even try removing all the PCI cards and see if that helps (before reinstalling or something more drastic).

The only think it could be for me is PCI cards. I have a couple of them (WinTV, Audigy Gamer, Modem, NIC). But the only other things I have plugged into my USB is my mouse and keyboard.
