This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO annoying. So very very annoying.

I'll start with the basics:

My first mouse was the:
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer

My Current mouse is the:
Microsoft Intellimouse Optical

I am running WinXP Pro on:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
786 MB Ram

Here is the problem:
This started happening a few months ago...and ive been trying to work on it myself and i cant figure it out for the life of me. It happened with BOTH mice too. What happens is I will hear the bloop bloop sound that winxp makes when a USB device becomes disconnected. Then 1 second +/- it makes the same bloop bloop again. During that 1 second or so, my mouse beomes non active. The laser light goes off, and comes back on. So basically I will be playing a game online, or cruising the interent, and that will happen and I will have to wait for a few seconds no matter what im doing and wait for it to come back to life. This happens every few minutes...id say about once every 10 - 20 min.

Things ive tried (that i can think of):

Taking my mouse out of the USB port and putting it back in (no effect)

Checking my device manager....but there is something strange about it. Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, I have 3 USB Root Hub, I also have 3 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller. I have tried deleting all but one of each...didnt do a thing.

Ive tried uninstalling the software and just using it...(no effect)

Ive tried reinstallin the mouse software....(no effect)

WHAT IS WRONG!?!? This is one of the most annoying thins in the world. ANY help would be SOOO greatly appreciated. Thx!!

Is the mouse connected directly to the USB ports on the motherboard, or one on an expansion plate on the back or front? If the latter, try changing the port it connects to - this would signify a bad connector from the ports to the motherboard.

John

This is the USB directly connected to the motherboard.

OK that rules out a bad connection from the USB backplate to the motherboard.
Both mice can be connected to the PS/2 port - does the same thing happen if you connect it to the PS/2 mouse port with the supplied adapter?

John

You might also check to make sure you have the latest BIOS and drivers from your mobo manufacturer. I have seen this problem a few times and one of the two almost always takes care of it.

Ok, so i plugged it back into my PS/2 port, and it works fine...none of that happened again. But still, I would like to use my USB port if i can.

Would a Bios update really do it?? I mean...my bios really isnt that old...maybe a year?

You'd be surprised how often many manufacturers release new bios revisions and/or driver revisions. I'm not saying that in your particular case it WILL take care of the problem, I'm merely saying it's another avenue to explore. Many mobo manufacturers actually release a new BIOS every month or two. Let me know what you find.

Is there any reason why you prefer your mouse being driven through USB rather than the PS/2 port?

As has been said many times, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

John

I want to use my USB becuase its hot swappable. I dont always use the same mouse. I have 3 mice.

Sorry for the double post, but I JUST updated my BIOS...it was in fact several updates behind.

I will run it for a couple days with the mouse plugged into my USB port. I'll get back to you guys whether that worked or not. THX!

Ok, the bios update didnt fix it. Anything else to try??

Anyone? Anything? Anything at all? Or am I SOL?

Does the same thing happen with other USB devices?
(just wondering if it is the mouse or the computer), also have you tried these mice in another PC to see if they work properly in USB mode?

John

I have 2 mice. One mouse I have always used. Always worked fine untill recently. I just bought a new mouse. It "should" work just fine. It does the same thing. I also have a Gamepad its a Logitech Dual Action (which is problematic in itself) and it does it too..but it could just be that it has bugs. But yea..3 things do it. I dont think I need to try them on other computers. Im pretty sure they would work fine.

Thx for trying, but none of those are similar to my situation.

The point is that there are several Hotfixes to deal with USB issues.

But fundamentally I suspect the issue is the VIA chipset that underlies your USB support.

You might check http:\\ to see if there is any newer chipset level drivers you can use.

Hey Ziov,
Did you ever get this resolved?I am also having the exact same problem and did everything that I could find related to the subject.I have tried all usb ports reinstallation of usb drivers,etc,etc...!I have the same mouse also but am running on an nforce2 with 1 gb of 2700,XP 2500+, and winxp with sp1 and all updates.Hmmm maybe a logitech mx500

No, this problem has not been resolved for me. My mouse is not dead, I have 2 mice that work. They just lose connection for a few seconds, then come back on. Every now and then they lose connectoin alltogether, and I have to plug it into my other USB port and it works...just has that few seconds loss of connectivity.

Hi,

im running 2600 amd athlon and 512 mb ddr

I have exact same problem as you Ziov, except my mice dont work in ps2 either, ive tried updating drivers etc.. but nothing works, just freezes every 3 minutes and u hear the sound of it disconnecting/reconnecting. this has been going on for weeks :-\ my newer mouse (ms explorer 3.0) seems to cut off more frequent to my old 1.
I also noticed in device manager, Motherboard resources has an exclamation mark and says : Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)

help plz -_-
