I have a mouse issue. the mouse works fine, but within the mouse settings, the slider to adjust the pointer speed is greyed out, so I can't adjust the pointer speed. I've uninstalled the mouse and reinstalled letting xp pro redetect the mouse, and I've let the driver update search for an update, but it was happy with the current driver. I'm logged on as administrator as well. the mouse is a microsoft intellimouse 5 button optical. The pc had w2000 pro originally, and the problem existed there as well, and stayed thru the upgrade to xp pro.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Snakefoot noted:

If not satified with the possibilities of the Mouse-Applet in the Control Panel, then one can configure the acceleration with these DWORD registry values :
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Control Panel \Mouse]
MouseThreshold1 = 7 (Amount of pixels to move before going 2x normal-speed)
MouseThreshold2 = 0 (Amount of pixels to move before going 4x normal-speed)
MouseSpeed = 1 (0 = Disabled, 1 = Uses Threshold1, 2 = Uses Threshold1+2)

Snakefoot offers a nice chart for appropriate values:

If it helps, I had this exact problem on my works PC, so I asked for the MS Intellipoint software to be installed. That cured it.

Yes that fixed it here as well. I downloaded intellipoint 5.0, and that cured it. The registry entry changes didn't help, I tried all the settings recommended above to no avail.

Thanx to all.

It might help future posters that when you claim: "I've uninstalled the mouse and reinstalled letting xp pro redetect the mouse, and I've let the driver update search for an update, but it was happy with the current driver." that you are in fact current with the mouse drivers.

Intellimouse driver 5.0 is over a year old. I took you at your word.

You know something Castner? I've about had it with your pompous remarks and the way you hover over every thread that comes across tek-tips. You may be knowledgeable in many fields, but your human interaction and tact stinks.

I'm done with tek-tips.

My apologies.

But I did spend some time trying to suggest outside the box remedies for you under the assumption that you were current on all driver updates.

If you review my comments in this thread, I do not see the justification for the claim of "pompous remarks", but tone is nearly impossible to determine in email or forum remarks. As to my "hover over every thread that comes across tek-tips", it is a sheer impossibility with nearly 2,000 posts a day on the site.

Again, my apologies for not helping your individual case. I have often make a note in a thread for those using the forum Search feature, or those coming from a search engine like Google. The essential point I wanted recorded was that Win2k and previous allow sensititivity adjustments to the mouse through Control Panel, and XP does not -- unless the native drivers are upgraded with MS Intellimouse or third-party equivalents. And even in these cases the Control Panel may not permit adjustments -- one can do the same through the registry as I noted.

Again, my apologies if my notes offended you. I have no interest, desire or inclination to offend someone in the forums. But I know this can happen, and my apologies.
