i'm running windows 98 with a wisetech optical mouse on a computer with 256mb memory and about 150mb of free space on my C partition. i have another partition of 500mb for the windows' swap file.

i've used this mouse for the past 4 months. this morning when i first turned on my computer i noticed the problem. the mouse is stuck in the bottom left-hand corner. when i try to move the mouse, the pointer will move a short, variable distance and then jump back down to the corner.

my first thought was a hardware problem. i tried a different mouse (standard roller mouse), but the problem remained. next, i tried starting in safe mode. the mouse works aok in safe mode. next, i tried loading in standard mode, but ending task for all auto-load programs. problem remained. next, i tried removing the mouse from the device manager and rebooting. the mouse re-installed aok but the problem remained. i checked the bootlog.txt and everything is loading aok except for ndis2sup.vxd. i don't think this has anything to do with the mouse. i also checked my irq's. the mouse is using irq 12 with no conflicts.

as far as coinciding events, i did reinstall ms office 2000 yesterday (there was a problem with an activex component). however, that was mid-day and i used the computer after that with no problems. no other changes to the system were made. that the mouse works in safe mode suggests a driver conflict, but how do i determine the conflicting driver and how do i resolve it? i suppose i could try to reinstall windows, but.... any ideas on this one????

oh, also, the problem has also affected the keyboard. for example, if i use the tab key and enter key to open up the start menu, i can't use the arrow keys to highlight the different menu items. the highlight will only go one to two items and then disappear.

thanks,

glenn

Hi Friend,

I suspect Office 2000 is the culprit...

Did you have to reboot after installing Office 2000? If you didn't, then this could be why your mouse remains working after the installation. Office 2000 might have overwritten some dlls causing version conflict to the mouse and possibly the keyboard as well.

You could try obtaining/installing latest mouse driver and/or removing Office 2000 to see whether it helps. Then reinstall what you need, but keep your eyes out for prompts that suggest overwriting newer/older version.

Good luck!

thanks for the reply. i did reboot after installing office 2000, so i'm not sure what to think there. i did, however, get some more info by using the system configuration utility. by doing a "selective startup", i was able to determine that the source of the problem was occuring in the system.ini file. i then deselecting all of the system.ini and gradually added things back in until i finally found the one problem line.

under the folder "drivers" is a line for wintab=ccwt95.drv. if this is deselected or "rem"'d out, then everything is fine. also, all the other drivers have a window's icon, but this one doesn't. this would appear to be the driver for a calcomp writting tablet that i have attached, but it's strange that it should just now start causing a problem since i've have it installed for a long time without any issues. any thoughts? i guess for the time being i'll just use it as it is with a selective startup.

thanks,

Hi Friend,

It might be time to also update Calcomp driver. I assume your tablet is sharing the same ps/2 connector as your mouse?
