Hi Everyone,
I would like to know what is the proper way to upgrade a p3 motherboard to a p4 and keep all the other components the same. I ahve done this once and got a blue screen after boot up so I must not be doing something right.

ps: I had replaced the board with a P4 processor and P4 memory.

Thanks

What is the IDE chipset on the two boards? Are they different?

For instance, going from a mobo with an Intel chipset to one with a VIA or SIS chipset will usually result in a STOP7B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error. I don't know for sure, but it's more than likely a difference in the way the chip handles I/O.

I have been successful at swapping mobos between VIA and SIS chipsets with no errors whatsoever. Usually I'll have to install a few drivers, but that's about it.

If the chipsets are different, I would suggest putting your system back together in it's original config, backing up all your goodies and then upgrading with a clean install of the OS.

Sorry but there's no lazy way to do it right.

I've asked some of the other thech here and I found out that with Windows XP it's suicide to upgrade more than a couple of devices, because then XP thinks it is an illegal copy and will not run. Windows 2000 is similar but not as bad. I have to apologise as I have only been doing Windows 2000 upgrades for about half a year now, I mainly specialise in Win9X which doesn't have this problem.
