Hi guys

I have a dead computer in our office that, when i switch it on, just produces a blank screen.

I tested the hard drive in another computer and it seems to work ok since i can access the files. So i assume there is something wrong with the motherboard, maybe the onscreen graphics card.

is there a software which i can run on a working PC, to check the motherboard in the broken PC for faults ? via USB or something ?

thanks for any advice.

Test an inoperative motherboard using one of its interfaces such as USB (or parallel or serial...) which requires a sizeable portion of the same motherboard to be operative? Highly unlikely.

Suppose it was available. From where would you obtain the failing part(s) and how would you replace them?

A new all-in-one mainboard costs what? $50 to $100?

Good luck,
Engin

its not so much to replace failing parts but more to find out whats actually wrong at which stage with the system...right now i suspect its the on board graphics card.

true though, if the USB port on the board is stuffed such a system wouldnt really help either.

If you feel the graphics chip might be bad try a known working AGP, PCI or PCI-e add-in graphics card.

Can you get to the BIOS? If not you are out of luck. Even if you install a new Graphics card usually you have to shut off the onboard graphics in the BIOS. IF the board uses jumpers to choose the Graphics source then you can go wiht an add on card.
Is the speaker turned on? Let the computer boot all the way and listen for sounds if you get the Windows intro. then it is just the graphic chip, if you get notheing it MAY be that the board is dead.

Get Hirens Boot CD and run the Testing apps that are on the disk.... There are tests for each interface

Given this isnt the best method but its easy?

TechieTony - Hirens BCD will not work in this situation...

StNixon - FYI, there are mainboards out there, that if you add an AGP GFX card, the onboard VGA is turned off...

ITDude09 - Q: when you turn on the PC, are any of the fans moving? lights blinking?

it may just be that the PSU has gone south on you, even if fans are moving, it still could be a RAIL is dead and the mobo is just not receiving correct currents to all the components...
