Greetings:

I have a Compaq Presario S3100NX that contained a FIC AM37 motherboard (Socket 462 -- Socket A).

My question is: How am I able to locate another motherboard (NOT another AM37), but one that is compatible with this system.

I've searched various sites in hope of finding one that will fit the case, but the screw-holes are somewhat mismatched.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated...or if you have further questions, please hollar!

I had one of those "one sided" cases to repair. The case is riveted together. Forget about trying to trouble-shoot it. The hard drive is a sub-unit as is the floppy drive. You remove those (release levers), and the power supply, and you can get to the screws that hold in the CDrom. After you remove this, you can get to the memory sticks. Carefully remove those and remove the CPU/cooling assembly. At this point, you have two choices: scrape the whole thing into a large trash bin, or carefully put it back together and tell the client that there is nothing you can do!

Thats about it, Micker377,lol. Really, its so pathetic!!
Imagine a riveted case!! I couldnt believe my eyes.

Yes, i could have done that, taken it apart, but the computer was still under warranty so i told him he had a choice, to pay me to replace the drive that day, while he waited, and pay me, or to bring the unit to Radio Shack and wait a few weeks to a month but pay nothing. He chose to wait and it cost him a full month. I did tell him the computer, if it was gone for a month, would depreciate about what i would charge him so he wouldnt really lose out. But he was so upset with Acer that he decided to at least let them have to pay for a new cdrom.

I think that as much as we know not to buy a computer it could be that we dont get it across to people enough that its better to have someone local put a unit together for us.
Then again, we always hear about some jerk who calls himself a tech and puts together a frankenstein and makes us look bad, lol. Sometimes you just cant win.

I am actually a late starter, so it was a real eye-opener for me when i got in some of these older IBM machines, 486, early Pentium, Pentium Pro, even some Pentium 2's, to see how well-built some of those units actually were, some of the cases, and just the smart technology and good planning and good quality cases and such, amazing. Sure they didnt have some of the tool-less designs but they were a lot better built units, a shame to throw them out. Thats how i got into my charity work as i hate to see those old P and P2 units go to the dump!! They are just too darn good to go! Just too well put together. Much better than some of the junk we see today, like Acer's rivets!!!

I apologize for using your thread this way, but sometimes I am just a bit too passionate about my work and the stuff i see, sorry to use your thread.
I hope i have made up for it by giving you good advice above.
I dont think you ever did let us know if your Compaq's mobo and power supply are proprietary or generic?
If you dont know yet, all you have to do is either contact Compaq, not owned by HP, or, better yet, bring the case in to a repair shop. I bet they will take one look at it and tell you at not cost to you.

ok im realy new here but i feel i should post this info i used this thread to base my purchase of a new motherboard for my compaque pesario wm4020 and used the sugested AsusA7V400-MX after doing some research on bolth motherboards and it was a drop in replacement for the FIC am37 with better features than the fic board so ill share this info with you all and say thanks for the site

In that case, perhaps you can tell us. Did you use the original compaq power supply? If you did then it wasnt propretary after all, which is what paparazzi thought and i agreed with him, just there was no 100% proof.
And nobody came along to tell us if Compaq uses proprietary power supplies and pin-outs like Dell. I dont know if Dell still does this but they certainly have the reputation for doing this proprietary garbage.
So what is the answer to that?
