I'm a little confused as to how to get my motherboard out of the case in a Hewlett Packard Pavilion 734n. On the side of the case that the MB is on, it looks like the metal plate that the MB is screwed to should come out, but upon closer inspection, I see that there are these little rivet-like devices holding the plate in. I don't know if there is a tool for this rivet, or if it's meant to be left alone. The alternative is to take the MB out from the other side of the case, which would involve taking everything else out, like the power supply, all the drives and drive bay housings. It seems very inconvenient to do it this way. Any thoughts? Thanks.

More than likely you have to take it all out. It is meant to be hard. This is why I don't buy any proprietary machine.

You might be able to download a technical service manual for it from HP. That would tell you the official procedure. I have an older HP machine and was able to download a manual for it a while back. However, I did just try to look yours up and couldn't find anything other than the user's manual. Maybe it's there somewhere.

Thanks a lot for your insights, guys. I'm studying to be a tech, just passed the A+ exam, but need some more hands-on/practical experience. There's only so much you can get from a book, so I appreciate your help.

Hello Sunspore,
You have to take everything out. Also if your OS came bundled on the HP restore disk, you won't be able to use it because the bios id check that it runs won't match your new/replacment board.

Hi Mainegeek,
Excellent point. There actually was no OS disk, bundled or otherwise. I had to call Microsoft to have one mailed. I had that bios ID check problem before with an IBM laptop and a Windows 98 disc. Thanks.

I’m not sure about a "HP", but in "Gateways" there is a similar setup. There is a thumb screw like the ones that hold some cases shut in the center of the board. once you remove that thumb screw, the board slides gently to the front of the case and lifts out. all of the hex screws stay in place and actually hold little "t" pins that the board slides on. Hope for your sake its that simple. However I’ve heard that “HP's” are very touch comps and I will be surprised to find that the case jumpers in your hp case will fit any other board. Good luck!!
