Most Common Resolution used today?? 1

What is the most commonly used desktop resolution used these days?? I am trying to figure out what resolution to design my page for.. I currently run 1280 x 1024... Should I design it for 1024 x 768??

Any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

As a web site designer myself, one of the first rules of web page design that I learned was to design/size the site to ensure minimum viewing difficulties for the majority of browsers/monitors.

The problem arises and manifests itself when one uses "Static" and NOT "Liquid" design for their pages. It is especially important, if one is designing a "e-Commerce" site, to give the maximum amout of lattitude available for most all viewing possibilities. Visitors are willing to scroll "vertically".. while more often than not will abandoned a site more readily if forced to scroll "horizontally." This one factor alone could cost the "e-Commerce" site/business the loss of a potential customer.. and thus added revenue.

Checkout the browser stats from the W3C: [tt]
lower = 5%
640 x 480 = 1%
800 x 600 = 37%
1024 x 768 = 47%
higher = 10%[/tt]

Based on the stats that manarth showed, and the stats here from Thecounter.com, I'd advise 1024x768, but with a view to keep the actual informational content within 800x600.
