I am planning on installing MOSS2007 on an existing web server. This web server is not currently in an active directory domain, and is using local users and groups for authentication in the web application.

What would happen if the server joined a domain? Would SharePoint break? Would everything the 'webserver/johnsmith' user created have to be re-permissioned to 'activedirectorydomain/johnsmith'?

SP wouldn't "break", as the local users & groups would still be there and access would still be allowed via them.

However, yes everywhere 'webserver/johnsmith' was located, it would need to be changed to 'activedirectorydomain/johnsmith'. There are some tools that would make this a little easier (see but it would still be a pretty manual process. If you only have 10-20 users, not too big of a deal, but with 10000 it would be a little tougher.

35 users to be exact. :) Thanks for the info.
