Hi, sorry to post what isn't actually regarded as a problem with a router here, it's just I didn't know where else to turn.

Does anyone know of any cisco routers that will allow you to monitor both total internet traffic as well as displaying information of internet traffic per I.P (or, even better to show which ports on which I.P are being used as well as bandwidth?)

Didn't know whether SDM on some routers have the functionality to display the above? I really dont know what I'm looking for - are there any alternative routers that will enable me to display what i'm after?

Cheers in advance :)

What you're looking for is actually not a router but a network managment software like Solarwinds. We use Solarwinds (not by choice) at my company and you can set it up to do just about anything.

Hi g0at,

It seems you are looking for two things
1: Total traffic (utilization)
2: Information flow (Who is doing what)

1: MRTG.
It is free (GNU GPL) and it is usefull for the quick overview.

2: Netflow

a: Ntop.
This tool shows you the Top Network users.
It is free and gives you an idea who is using your network.

b: NetflowTracker.
It is not free, but it allows you to monitor the traffic flowing through your router in great detail. Your router must be able to export Netflow data.

That should have read:

The download runs unrestricted for 30-days

forgive me here, i'm totally new to this
Is there anyway to monitor a gateway rather than a local machine with Ntop?

I mean, i've installed it on my pc, opened the statistics webpage and it only shows data sent / recieved to / from my pc. How do i use to analyse a gateway (if it's a router)? Basically I just want to see which users are caining the bandwidth at any given point..

.. I'm not an Network Manager or anything like that.. our I.T Director has kindly asked whether i could look into it

A Cisco router with the IDS and firewall feature set IOS will do just that, also using AAA, the accounting feature. CCSP stuff.

Hi g0at,

In order for to see the type of traffic passing through your network with the program NTOP is to connect it to a switch that supports port mirroring. Extreme, Cisco, and HP switches have this feature in most of their products. You can mirror the port on your switch that connects to your firewall or edge router, so that information is mirrored to the port that you have your NTOP server running on. Make sure you have a server or pc that has 2 NIC interfaces or one card with 2 network connections. The latest version of NTOP also supports Netflow exports.
