I have been using an old 14 inch Compaq P50 monitor for years with no problems. Just recently, for about 5 mins after I turn it on, I get no red on the screen, that is, the picture looks very blue, and where there should be red, its just black. I though at first it was a connection issue, but there is no red on the On-Screen Display either. Sometimes if I hit it hard enough :), the picture goes back to normal straight away... A loose solder join maybe or should I start saving for a new one...?

More than likely you've already tried this but here goes:

Wiggle the wire and both the monitor end and the video card end while you watch the screen and see if the colors come and go...if that's the case then it's more than likely a damages wire somewhere in the cord.
