Hi People

DAK if there is a module which can monitor web pages downloaded by a browser, with a view to logging useage? Sort of like a firewall or proxy app I suppose.

TIA

You have access logs with your webserver that can show all page accesses and by definition 'logs usage'.

Tools like MRTG can watch your network traffic and 'log usage' at the network level directly.

Can you be more specific with your goals?

Ok. My appologies for being vague. I'm coming at this from the other end I think.
I want to run an app on a PC which will log the pages a user downloads.

Sounds like you need a keystroke monitor or other security tool. I'd check the security forum, the windows forum and do a google search for 'key stroke logging' or 'key stroke logger'

Definently not a question for this forum.

There's the temporary internet files folder? You could write a short app to index that every 20 mins or so

Thanks Paul and Si

I'm getting the picture here that there is nothing obvious that can actually monitor ports.

No worries. Thanks for your time.

There are tons of software the monitor network traffic. Remember, port 80 is the port you are connecting TO, not the port your traffic is comiig FROM.

You are specifically asking 'I want to see what users are doing on their machines'. You can buy this sort of software from people like Symantec and other security vendors.

Granted, But why pay for something if you can write it yourself?

Thanks again for your time

When you haven't got the time to, sometimes it's more efficient to pay someone else when they've already expended the time and effort in writing and testing and debugging and testing and rewriting and testing ( i can see a pattern forming here ...) and testing and testing and testing

Well, obviously you are not writing it yourself ;)

Beyond the build or buy argument, what you are asking for is something that has to run at the OS level, its not a simple 'script' or 'cgi' thing. Its a local service that monitors specific applications or outbound network traffic.

You can build it yourself but its not a simple problem to solve. You cna buy software for $50 to handle this for you. That makes spying on people easier ;)
