We are trying to find out if there is a way to differentiate between an incoming Fax and a phone call in Modular Messaging using a single phone number for both calls and faxes. Avaya is saying that there is no way to route a fax call any different than a phone call coming in to a desk phone. Cisco has a solution, but Avaya doesn't seem to. Does anyone know about this and if there might be any 3rd party software that might accomplish this?

I would love to hear the Cisco solution to this as i do not think it can be done without any intervention from the user.

If the promise of SS7 signaling was available then you could do this but unless the receiver knows that it is a fax mach calling rather than a person.

This said you would need to answer the call first to see if you hear fax tone and if not ring the phone.

I think interactive intelligence has something similar. The call is interrogated cna checked for fax tone. The only problem can can't be solved by that is those manual fax users that wait to hear a fax recieve tone before they hit the start key/button so fax tone going out isnt detected by the called party.

The best case is to use secondary number for this purpose. they are easy enough to use and very cheap these days.

Avaya mentioned that they had a solution in One-X that would use a unified nuuber for both fax and calls. Having 2 different numbers is defeating the purpose of having a unified number. We will be using Rightfax server, so maybe we can just use that for all our faxing.

Cisco does have a solution where the call is screened and if it is a fax the call is send to the Fax server, if not the call is then routed to the person's phone ext.
