modifying the search function

can anyone tell what needs to be changed in order for the search function in sharepoint to recognize incomplete words/wrongly spelt words etc. Currently, if the word is not spelt correctly, sharepoint returns no results.. Helppppp

The fetchlist procedure (SQL database) had been modified so what i did was change the containstable statement to freetexttable but this is still not working.. I thought sharepoint uses freetext, why aint it working?? Helppppp
