I have a netopia/cayman 3341 modem and a di604 dlink router. I need to open up a port on the connection to allow dial in for remote access. The port I need to open is 5409. The netopia is has an ip address of 192.168.1.254 and subnet 255.255.255.0. The router has an ip address of 192.168.0.2. The modem is setup for bridging. I cannot seem to get past the modem when it is setup like this. I directly connected the modem to my pc and setup my ip address to be on the same as the modem i.e. 192.168.1.31. When I use the pinhole with this setup everything works ok. But as soon as I introduce the router again, it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Well the router is on a seperate network to the modem.

You should either change the router IP to 192.168.1.X, or, change the subnet mask on all devices to 255.255.0.0 to allow all devices with address 192.168.X.X to communicate.

That explains why you can't get past the modem - it doesn't know the router is there because it is on a different network, so can't 'talk' to it.

Give that a try and post the results.

Hope this helps.

You need to make sure your router is setup for PPPoE and your username and password need to be the same username and password you use to log into your primary email account. When you put the modem into bridged modem you bypass the DHCP server functionality built into the modem and your DLinks DHCP has to take over...thusly it will need to use PPPoE and have your username/password to authenticate on the network. Also, you will have to manually configure the port range/port forwarding in your router to open pin holes. The easer solution would be to get a Netopia 3347W with WI-FI access as it eliminates the need for a router and setting up pinholes/portforwarding is alot easier. Hope this helps.
