Modem Reboots Computer....

Dear All:

I have a compaq 5050 that locks up completely or just reboots when the phone rings. I have updated firmware on both the PC and the modem to no avail. This piece of junk is almost 5 years old and obsolete, but it's all that I have.. Can anyone out there suggest something?????

Do you have some fax software or pcanywhere running that is waiting for an incoming call? You're probably on win98, check for background programs running, go to start, run, msconfig. Go to startup tab, uncheck any culprits, hit OK and reboot.

No, I don't think that I have any FAX software that's waiting for an incoming call, but will look. My dad said to look for a "Wake from modem" option somewhere and turn it off, but I can't find it anywhere.
