I recently moved to a place where broadband is unavailable. So I will need to move to dialup. I read somewhere that most serial external modems will work on Linux. Can anyone verify this claim? If so are there any good resources for setting one up?
Oh yes, this is the way to go.
Do not try those winmodem things, they are loadsa trouble.
Setup should be easy.
Plug the modem into your external serial and make sure you can see it's lights.
Next try "statserial /dev/ttyS0" to see if it's there. If it is you should see the lights change. If not, try ttyS1, ttyS2 and ttyS3 until you find it.
Next you should be able to use a desktop tool to setup a dialup account (Systems Tools->Network in RedHat for example). There are many free dialup accounts available that you don't need to sign up for. Just google for them.
In RedHat you would add a network using a modem and (say) /dev/ttyS0 as it's device.
You can setup username and password there and then just "activate" to dial.
And a good place to find modems is ebay, because so many people switching to broadband.
I searched for a modem some months ago, engaged with low budget in three auctions - and: got three modems - each one cheaper than the shipping costs.
(No - I gave away two of them and need the last one for fallback on visits/ vacations).
