Ok, we now have an internal modem in an STS system. I would like to set up remote access. My understanding is that I need to get to extension 499. My thinking is to setup some kind of direct dialing where I would call into a particular CO line and that would dial direct to the modem extension.

If this is correct, could someone tell me how to setup the direct dial?

do you have a voice mail. You can renumber Ext 499 and use the autoattendant to transfer you in.

I do have voicemail. What do you mean by renumber?

Set option 9 in the voicemail to transfer to 499. When you hit the auto-attendant, dial 9 and you will transfer to the phone system modem (which is an optional board you install). 498 is the voicemail modem and I set option 8 to dial 498. Good Luck. I think you need a 9 pin cable from the 2nd rs232 port on the side of cabinet to the 9 pin connector on the voicemail card to do remote changes to the voicemail directory.
