Modem missing in control panel

I have the modem installed in the device manager fine but the modem icon is missing in the control panel and I am getting errors atempting to make as connection, including lock up's. Windoes ME
Anyone seen this before?

Look for a conflict in device manager, or a question mark beside a serial port.If it exists reinstall the drivers on that device and point it to the modem drivers.

It turned out to be a faulty modem.
