Hey folks,

I am a new member here and have been a technician for over 20 years. Avaya/Lucent trained. I have a client with a trouble I have never seen and would really APPRECIATE any help.
Problem: Merlin Magix, single line extension. Calls to the extension receive a modem/fax tone. End-user can use the phone to dial out. I have traced the wiring from the IDF terminal and as best I can see there is nothing else physically attached to the wiring. I moved the extension to another port and renumbered that port to the right extension number (6018) and still get the tone. If you unplug the phone and dial the extension you get 4/5 rings and call goes to V.M... This is the most bizarre trouble i've seen in awhile. Is it possible the internal modem is somehow linked to that extension??? HELP, please

The s/l extension when plugged in gives a half ring then gets "the tone". When there is nothing plugged in to the port it rings 4 times then goes to V.M. I did NOT attempt to remove a forward, perhaps I should try that. To remove a forwarded phone, is the code *33 extension number ?
Thanks for your help.

Yes, *33 + Extension Number will remove forwarding.

However, I rather doubt that forwarding is your problem since you state that if you remove the connection it will ring until it goes to voice mail.

As telcomtekperson suggests, do a print of that extension to see if you can find anything in it's programming.

If you only get the tone when something is plugged into the port, then it MUST be something on that cable pair.

That's what I said. I asked the customer to run a new cable to the terminal in the warehouse. This is a manufacturing facility and their staff will get the wire run. Good for me. This way we know we have a cable straight from the equipment room out to the phone. I'll let you know what happens.

I have had this happen with one of our customers.
Every time some one would call a certain extension number, it would ring that extension a couple of times then a fax tone would be heard. A cover button was programmed on another analog extension that had a fax machine hooked to it.
This company had several fax machines on different extension through out the buildigs.
To find the problem, I busied out each of the analog cards one at a time and made a test call each time until it was narrowed down to one card. Made test call again until I unpluged the fax that was answering the calls on that last card. Went into centralize programming and found cover button programmed on that extension.
