Hi,
Got a bit of a dilemma here!

Having a look at a mate's PC.
Uses Tiscali broadband, modem with wireless and 4 wired ports.
1 wired to TV, 1 wired to PC.
Activity lights on modem for both ports.
Checked the drivers for the onboard LAN, ok.
Checked BIOS enabling onboard LAN, OK.
Tried a new LAN card, light on card, OK, even flashing (means activity correct ?)
But still no internet connection, says limited or no connectivity.

Any ideas guys / gals ?

Networking aint my strong point, so any advice appreciated.

THanks

An illuminated l.e.d. on the LAN card and on the modem/router doesn't necessarily mean "activity" or traffic. All it really tells you is that the LAN card and the modem/router recognise each other as legitimate network devices.

Has this Tiscali modem/router previously been working, or are we talking about a brand new installation you're trying to get going?

If it's a new device it might be a Siemens, and the IP Address will possibly be 192.168.1.1 which you may be able to PING from a command prompt on the PC.

Contrary to Tiscali's instructions, you don't need to run the supplied CD, but it's no big deal if you do...

Hi
By the sounds of it, the internet has been a problem for them for a while, and now worse (not at all) since they had tiscali tv put in.
Did advise them NOT to use tiscali but hey.......

Will try the modem at the weekend, taking my laptop over to see if there is anylife in the internet or its PC problem.

cheers

I've only ever seen one of those Siemens devices, and I can't remember if it showed signal margin and attenuation. Be useful if you're able to take along a known good router and check out those figures. Maybe their location is borderline for ADSL - maybe they're a long way from the exchange perhaps, or poor quality line. Worth plugging the router directly into the test socket on the NTE5, assuming they've got one...

Good luck!
