Either it's XP Pro or the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that will not find the card reader in my my mitsumi FA402-A internal combo FDD/card reader. I should say it does so erratically ... rarely the reader will show up on My Computer as two additional drives, but usually XP Pro just ignores the reader (or perhaps it is the "unidentified usb device", i'm not sure). I've deleted the unidentified device but New Hardware replaces it as such and does not find the card reader. I've deleted the USB root hubs but XP Pro finds them and my card reader is not among them. The cables are all tight. Any ideas, tricks or patches that you know of?

if so, a million thanks. I've got a lot of pix on a San Disk card and no easy way to read/see them ...

The voices in your head aren't real, but they have some really good ideas!

One more thing. In win xp we can go to computer management and there are a few places, like event viewer and performance logs, where we can pick up clues to a piece of hardware that is not working right.

thx for the tips. i was looking at card reader's this weekend!! i actually was looking at combo floppy DD's and readers to save a bay. It's just, i wanted to learn about the system if there was a way to get this stupid Mitsumi to work! Ah, well, cut my losses.
I am running WinXP SP2, not SP1, i don't know if that's a going to make difference or not. i guess i'll be finding out

I would be like you, wanting to fix it and find the source of the problem in case it happens with other usb stuff.
Pity the mitsumi people cant help you any. And i guess you never got the patch to take hold either?
Might just be time to just get another.
The one i am using is USB CARD READER model # UCR-61.
Its kind a of a cheap silver plastic thing but it works great. It actually sets up in win explorer as 4 different separate drives and you can drag and drop, cut and paste to them. Seems to me i found a lot of them on the net when i first got it, just plug in "UCR-61" to google and go. I mention all this as i too have an MSI NEO2 mobo, maybe not exactly the same mobo but pretty close.

Seems i made a small mistake. The one i mentioned above is, i believe the same unit, but looks a bit diferent than mine. Its the same UCR-61 number so its the same unit.

The actual one i have, its a dollar cheaper at $4.99 and its this one:

Mickerry -

FYI, I have the EXACT same problem. Mitsumi reader using XP pro SP2 (different mobo Abit fatal1ty an8sli). Same symptoms and tried the same fixes, nothing.

Oddly, plugging in an external USB multi card reader triggers the USB mass storage device and loads the drives without a hitch.

No big deal, just like to get that mitsumi working on a regular basis.

Well, we all know to stay away from the Mitsumi units, lol.

laws215, thx - i KNEW it had to be a problem others have had too!!
did you load the mitsumi as an external card reader in an external slot, or a different card reader? (Which one did you pick up?) I really had wanted an internal device - i guess actually i could get one too, based on garebo and firewolfrl have had to say.

by the way, i finally reached mitsumi customer support, it does look like i'll be able to return this one to mitsumi with an RMA, hopefully get a refund ...

Let us know if the replacement works. At this point i have some doubts, hope im wrong.

Mickerry,
I bought an external SanDisk.

Here's another twist. External Sandisk in a fairly new Acer (don't have the specs) running XP Pro SP2 loads drive letters, but reads CompactFlash card as unformatted (they are). Attempts at a Fat or Fat32 format yields a "Windows cannot format" error. Same CompactFlash card is read normally using the external reader when its plugged into the original comp (Abit fata1ty mobo), a comp running XP Home SP2 and a digital camera.

I hate to waste forum space with this because the solutions are so inexpensive (unless you buy a lot of them!). I'd guess it has more to do with XP Pro SP2, but I don't know.

I have had a few of those scandisk usb readers, never had a problem at all with them.
But i am one of those who are very very wary of service packs. I believe when they first come out they are junk, so i never use them. I wait til they are very old, til sp2 comes out, then i install sp1. M\soft changes the service packs so that the last ones are way better than the first ones. I still havent installed sp2 and i tell my customers, not yet, wait a bit, pretty soon.
No real reason to install sp2 and lots of good reasons not too!
Same goes with using scandisk and defrag. I honestly believe they cause more trouble than they fix!! I have had the same win xp pro for, oh, 4 yrs or more. I have never run scandisk or defrag. All i do is manually edit registry when uninstalling a program. And most of the small progs inside norton system works are as bad as scandisk and defrag. Sorry, this is not the place, but someone mentioned sp2! Also, this thread is pretty well done now anyway, so i hope you dont mind.
