How do you flash a new mobo bios running Windows XP Home?I have a SOYO SY-P4X400 DRAGON Ultra Platinum Edition Mobo.Their site only describes how to do it in Win95/98.I wish they would get with times.Their support is terrible. The newest update is suppose to fix my CPU temperature reading.Currently stuck at 43C.Also how do you verify that the update took?

Download the zip file. Unzip it. Inside is the "bin" file(this is the bios update) and awardflash.exe( this is the program that does the flash) you just have to make a bootable floppy ( you should have this option when you format a floppy; copy system files or something similar, I don't have xp but that's how it is in win98) Then you copy the bin file plus the awardflash program to the floppy. boot from the floppy and run the program. then follow the directions it gives. It's a good idea to have a UPS 'cause if you lose power during a flash you're s**t out of luck.
Hope this helps

I forgot to add that you can see which bios version you have running when you bootup it is displayed on the screen for a short while. If it's too fast then hit delete when you boot up and go into the bios screen the version will be there somewhere...

1. soyo's website has fairly good support, every single driver, bio, manual u need.
2. it's new mobo, there's no need to flash bio unless there has been a critical update.
3. u need a win98 boot disk, i think...(at least i haven't figure out a way to use winxp create a boot disk yet)
4. i really don't think u have bad bio. hehe read more before u know what u doing anyway.

peace

I know you all mean well, but 98 and Xp are two different worlds. If you decide to respond to a question,at least be running the same system or have some knowledge about that operating system that's in question. As far as Soyo's site goes,I know that they have all the info for updating the bios, but they only tell you how to to it in Windows 98. Windows XP doesn't boot to dos like 98.

You can use any kind of boot disk (DOS/95/98/ME) it doesn't matter what OS is on your system as you don't go near it! It probably wouldn't matter even if the drive was NTFS as you don't need any kind of hard drive access. A bios flash is carried out from the floppy that you boot from - nowhere else - if you don't have a boot disk you can get one from Boot from the disk and follow the instructions from the Soyo site as it is not an OS related procedure - it's always the same. All you are doing is reprogramming the eprom on the bios chip - which has to be done BEFORE any OS is loaded. When it's finished you reboot and the system restarts with the new bios program.(Remember to remove the floppy!)
I think that everyone who has given you advice so far does know something about what they are saying - I think that you have a small misconception about it yourself - but that's ok - we all have to learn - if you knew how to do it in the first place you would never have asked the question!

I have just seen that this is the second time that you have posted this question - and the first time you got a perfectly good answer from win98user. If you don't understand the answer that you are getting - please say so - but once more so that it is clear and we don't have to keep repeating ourselves - you can only flash a bios from a bootable floppy disk (or CD equivelent) - WINDOWS XP HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!

Thanks for the input.I'll listen more and not be so quick to judge.

You can create a bootable floppy in XP, in Windows Explorer or My Computer right click on the floppy drive, (A:) and select format. In the resulting window check the box that says "Create an MS-dos Startup Disk" and click on Start. This will give you a basic boot disk that you can add your flash files to. No CDROM or mouse support but you will not need them Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

all the info helped.I was able to flash with all of your help. thanks
