the intel mobo manual says max. ram is 512mb.
If I install a single 512mb chip (which was pulled from a working pc I'm told) all i get is three beeps.
I've seen on some computers where the boot screen shows more ram than what is actually installed. could it be that this mobo is seeing more than 512mb? like 524mb?
Thanks in advance.
Ive used all 3 dimm slots...same effect.

Please post the specs of your motherboard as well as the specs of the RAM you are using.

Right, usually there is a max amount per DIMM slot as well. On older boards like this, it's probably 256MB.

Another possibility is the chip layout on the DIMM. Higher densities and being single- or dual-sided play a factor as well (dual-sided are typically more compatible when it comes to SDRAM). It could also be that the motherboard is having a hard time initializing the one you're using.

Intel® Desktop Board D815EEA/D815EPEA was the board in question. The ram did work in a newer board so I guess it was a compatibility problem. thanks for all the replies.

jdumont,
Yes, we were pretty sure the RAM module wasn't the problem. As mentioned before, the max amount per RAM slot was probably 256MB on that board. So the 512MB wouldn't work...

just tying to contribute to the community for the next person looking. Heck... maybe even someone with an Intel® Desktop Board D815EEA/D815EPEA.
;)

Actually, table 5 in the manual shows what densities and memory types/sizes will work:

I do stand corrected. It appears that there is ONE configuration possible where a 512MB stick of SDRAM will work on this board. However, it is quite likely that the 512MB module you had didn't because of its density properties. As you can see from the table, it is less picky about 128MB modules and smaller.

Luckily, we don't have to worry about older boards like this 815 chipset anymore!
