I've just started to use MMC and it seems like a brilliant tool. However, I'm totally unsure on how to "make it work". I did all of my snap-ins, and customized the MSC file, but what do I do with it?

How can I get these policies onto my users workstations and make it effective?

I have NT4 servers, and 2000 wrks.

Which MMC snapins are you using? Some of them the effect is immediate, whereas others you need to apply the settings.

The MMC is sort of a strange (but effective) approach to doing things.

I think what makes it unusual (to me) is that you kind of get used to Microsoft machines having these total overkill interfaces for everything, with huge menus leading to 10 layer-deep dialog boxes that each have 6 tabs on them (we've all been there... trying to figure out which tab you've already checked out because each time you look at one, the rest of them move! AHHH that drives me nuts!).

Now, all of a sudden, you find yourself staring at this incredibly powerful interface that can do ANYTHING, but on it's own does NOTHING... and because it can do anything, the documentation for it is really lame, because you can't really document what is, in effect, an empty container for whatever you choose to put in it.

For me, using the MMC to configure IIS turned out to be a really good way to get introduced to using the tool , and getting a handle on the whole idea that you can stick just about anything you like in it. (I guess because it uses an MMC that's already "started" with a snap-in for you). I would check Micrsoft's IIS documention for tips about using snap-ins.

Here's a good link:

Well the first thing to learn is that MMC itself is useless without a snapin loaded. MMC only loads the snapins, it's a "frame" for configuration programs (called snap ins).

What snap ins are you using?

You mention policies so I'll assume you are looking at GPO's. You must create a policy then assign it to an OU (Organization Unit) in your AD (Active Directory). If you are not using AD then you won't have any OU's and won't have any place to publish your GPO's.

Don't worry, take your time. :)
