You might get an error saying not everything was backed up, and that's probably because a file existed when it inventoried the rootvg, then was gone when it was time to back it up. This tends to happen with monitoring software.
Something like this:
Creating information file (/image.data) for rootvg.
Creating list of files to back up..
Backing up 61472 files..............................
3142 of 61472 files (5%)..............................
5726 of 61472 files (9%)..............................
12440 of 61472 files (20%)..............................
16433 of 61472 files (26%)..............................
25074 of 61472 files (40%)..............................
43046 of 61472 files (70%)...................
0512-003 mksysb may not have been able to archive some files.
The messages displayed on the Standard Error contained additional
information.
I do have oracle on rootvg as well and i do a mksysb while oracle is up! but i don't rely on the oracle directory that i would backup because some of the files would not backup properly.
I think "some of the files would not backup properly" qualifies as a problem, and yoda37 wanted to know if there would be any.
Bottom line, yoda37, is there's no problem with the system part of a mksysb run while the system's in use, but any data in the rootvg that might be in an inconsistent state due to applications being live should be backed up in a more appropriate manner (i.e. online backup from within app, or shutting down app before backup).

I just looked into the problem from a different view point! its not a problem for the users!?! They can continue working and the mksysb will not disturb what the users are doing! its just that as you said the oracle apps files might not be reliable!
