Here is our problem:

We have a B80 with 3 17GB disks using a total of 51GB of space. We have a spare B50 with one 70GB disk that we wish to use as a backup just in case. Every Monday we perform a mksysb backup with the -i -m & -X options. We tried to restore the mksysb tape on the B50 but after the restore was complete we received the following errors:

0654-200 /unix The file specified was not found.
Followed by
0301-153 Bosboot /unix not found.

At the bottom there was two options; Continue or Go to System Maintenance. We went to System Maintenance and opened a shell to look for the missing /unix file. The file was actually there but was linked to /usr/lib/boot/unix_sp. There was no unix_sp in /usr/lib/boot directory so we looked at the B80 to see where it was pointed to. The /unix file on the B80 was pointed to /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp which there had been a copy of on the B50. We linked the /unix file on the B50 to the unix_mp file and then restarted the box and it went into a continous loop of restarting over and over.

By searching the internet we discovered that the unix_mp is the image file for multiprocessor boxes, but the both the B80 and B50 are uniprocessor servers.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what we are doing wrong either in the creation of the mksysb tape or during the restore? We was wondering if maybe we should have selected Continue instead of System Maintenance.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The process we used to create the job for running the weekly mksysb backup was to create a mksysb backup job using smit then we copied the command that smit used by entering Esc+6.

I don't see how it would be any differnt since smit is just a graphical display, right? I could be wrong....

Thanks

When restoring a mksysb from 1 type of server to another you need to boot off of the OS CD1 and tell it to restore a system from tape. This should load the proper device drivers for you B50 and make the server bootable.

I think you are getting stopped at the install level. You should be booting form a CD that is +/- one ML level form the mksysb. You can boot from tape if all you have nothing but time but Cd is way way faster. Now, once you are booted and have pressed 1 and enter twice, one to id the console and again to set English as the language. Once here you have the main three recovery options. The key here is that you need to set the value correctly for create mksysb that will restore on all types of systems. /unix is the kernel. MP and UP are the same in aix 5x. The unix_64 is the only different one. Best guess is that the CPU on a B80 differs enough from a B50 that the kernels are not compatible. The second purpose of the CD is it becomes the source to get the files necessary for the new HW platform. I pulled lots of this from my faulty gray matter but am relatively sure it has to do with this

Thank you both! It worked fined after using the install disk.

Thanks again!!
