mixing dimm sizes

Can you mix dimm sizes as long as the speeds and brands r the same? I'm running in dual channel mode with 2 sticks of 256MB. I'm pretty sure it's DDR400
 
Yes.

The motherboard would just revert to a single channel DDR configuration though.
 
you can infact mix dimms that are different brands and even different speeds...

although the latter is NOT recommended because it's not always possible, and the faster memory will be forced to run at a lower speed...
 
dakota81, so I can't have 256MB in slot 1 and 3 and 2 other 512MB sticks in slots 2 and 4 to keep dual channel mode

What mobo is it? A lot of them only have a specific pair of slots that run dual channel. Also if it's an AMD board the gains are minimal for dual channel anyway.
