Hello all,

We have just purchased 8 new 146GB 10K FC drives for our EVA 5000. Having received them I noticed that they are 10K drives and our existing 72GB drives are all 15K.

Will this impact performance?

Are there any other issues or concerns with mixing drive speeds in an HP EVA 5000?

Anyone know of a best practices paper from HP that makes a suggestion one way or another?

I have searched here and the HP site with no luck.

Thanks in advance,

Brent

Hey Brent,
Did you ever find what you needed? We just purchased an EVA 4000... Care to exchange notes ?? :)

Thanks!
Brandon

You can install mixed speeds and capacities of drives in an EVA. However, it's best practice to keep them into seperate diskgroups. Then again, it's also best practice not to create more than one diskgroup, hence it's not really a good idea to mix speeds and capacites. You'll end up with sub-optimal performance and more management with several diskgroups.

Ditto on the separate Disk Groups! You'll be glad you did. We have two separate ones relative to Raid type, but the same "best practice" will serve you well for different physical disk speeds. Afterall, the fastest component will only be as fast as the slowest variable. Separate the two speeds, and you will have better control over that. Fencing them off from one another will also benefit Tier criteria if you're getting different costs per physical drive type.
