Is there a way for the Mitel 3300 to supply DHCP for phones only? the customer is wondering if a person plugs a laptop or desktop into the voice network (they are on separate cables) we dont want to give any device but a phone an IP address.

can this be done in the 3300 options or do we need to add options to the corporate DHCP server to point the phones to the controller?

Yes there is.you need to name the ip address range iPhone.mitel.com then you click the box for must match class to true.

That's it

Or, if your switch supports lldp/cdp then use a tagged vlan on the ports for phones. this way when s pc plugs in it will not be on the voice vlan. Using this method you don't have to make any changes if you add a new phone to the network

Mitelmatt has it. There is a tech bulletin on this on MOL. Once setup the system will only supply IP addresses to phones.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

Well, technically, Bobcheese's solution works as well. I tend to use both.

How to program the 3300 DHCP server to only serve Mitel IP Phones

Body/Solutions
In order to prevent any other device except a Mitel IP Phone from getting an IP from the Mitel DHCP server, follow these steps

1. Give your IP Address Range the following name: ipphone.mitel.com
2. Enable the Client's class ID must match name option in the IP Range.

This causes the DHCP server to ignore all non-mitel IP Phone requests for an IP address. Please note that controller must be running 7.0 software or higher. As well if any new phones are added, then this option needs to be turned off until they upgrade their flash for the first time.

Ah but the question was if there was a way the 3300 could supply DHCP for phones only. Therefore MitelMatt gets the first price. :0

Loopylou, you should know by now that there is a big difference between giving the user what he asks for and giving the user what he wants/needs.

my only issue with the 'correct' way is that when you want to add a new device to the network, I have found in the past you must disable the 'vendors class must match' option or the phone wont pick up DHCP on its first boot. Once it has booted on the network for the 1st time you can enable again.

@bobcheese, I haven't had any issues with the client ID must match.

As I said earlier, I typically use both CDP/LLDP and Client ID

@Kwbmitel, see the bottom of the extract from the help file provided above by alex053. Its been a good while since I had to do it this way but I think it only applied to phones with really old firmware on them. I couldn't comment to say if this is still relevant.

i just plugged in a new 5330 and it had no problem getting DHCP with the "class ID" checkbox still checked.

Never had an issue with a new device not being able to boot. Perhaps a really old device might not recognize the option without a firmware update.
