I sent out my resume to 4 places last week. Now I see that I have the wrong area code for my phone number.

My area code changed 6 years ago, and I simply didn't notice since it used to be the right number.

I have been at my current job for 9 years and this is the first time that I updated my resume and sent it out.

I think I will just resend it with a note explaining the mistake. Thoughts?

Oh, and I should probably remove any lines like "detail oriented" from the cover letter, right? ;)

You can try resending with a note that explains the error. Otherwise if they see a resume without a note, most likely they will diregard the resubmission.

Also, have you tried calling that number with the area code? Most places around here still have a message from the Tel Co. saying what the new area code is. I think it expires several year (5-10) after the switch.

I just tried it. First some painfully loud tones blare into your ear, then it plays a message that says the area code or telephone number is not valid. Oh boy.

LadySlinger:

Usually the grace period (when you can dial either area code and still get through) is only a year. After that the unused numbers in both area codes are eligible for reassignment.

Solum potestis prohibere ignes silvarum.

If you have a wireless/cell phone change your resume to use that number. When re-sending, explain that you are no longer available at the previous number, and this is your new number.

One thing about this approach is, you are telling the truth.

Do a casual followup with HR to ask if there is anything more you can do and that you're interested in the opportunity. And BTW, your A/C changed and you wanted to make sure they had the new one... You'll probably have to leave a voice mail because most HR doesn't answer directly anyway. Good luck.

Thanks, some good advice in this thread.

A quick update is that I sent an email explaining the phone number error along with a new copy of the resume a few weeks ago.

Since then, I had a phone interview with 1 of the 4 places I sent a resume. The other 3 no longer have the job listed.

I am trying to move up from an overall Systems Administrator to SQL Server DBA, and it's likely that the mistake did not have much to do with a no call by 3 out of 4. I think my resume may look a little light for the DBA position, but I am working on it.
