I was installing Win XP PRO on my new machine and at around 93% of install, it system reported that the file "wmploc.dll" could not be copied and I had to "skip" it and continued with the installation to completion.

How can I get and install this dll file?

Was the PC a new build, and did you build it?

if yes, have you tested RAM? e.g. Memtest86+ from a bootable Floppy or Ultimate Boot CD...

is the install CD a burned copy of an original? if yes, throw it away and reburn the copy at the slowest speed possible... there is a high chance that the CD-R is faulty...

if it is an original then test the hardware first...

I agree with B3 that it is most likely a bad CD. I have had similar issues during XP installs and it always turned out to be the drive and install CD not getting along. Once I had a Dell laptop that would throw this error with a pressed Microsoft install CD, while a burned CD worked fine.

You should definitely try another CD before you start diagnosing the rest of your hardware.

If that is all that was skipped, perhaps, if your Setup is otherwise completed successfully, you could download WMP 11 and install that?

Any problems with "wmploc.dll" at a later time (post setup), then this thread and Google link might help?

Thank you Guys. Your responses have been very valuable. I think it was a case of a bad Cd (copy). The install was successfully completed despite the error and I believe Win XP PRO SP3 installed it.

You're all worth a star.
