Missing space in drive C: 1

Hey everyone, first off I have Win XP Pro. and I split my HD into 2 drives; drive C: and D:
Drive D: has about about 11GB out of which 7GB are free. Drive C: about 7.4GB out of which it says only 647MB are free. It used to say 1.5GB free, where did the space go?? I checked all known folders for large files but couldn't find any. I even checked all accounts. And the only thing I installed lately was NS7, that's it.
Any ideas?? Thanks.

Hello, I think your problem may bee that some of the space on one of your partitions may have slipped out into unpartitioned space. Check this by going to All Programs-Administrative Tools-Computer Management. Then go to Storage-Disk Magagement, and see what it says.

What is NS7?

If you have Norton SystemWorks, it could be that any deleted information is still being #ptrotected' until you empty the protected files in the 'Protected Recycle Bin'

System Restore (how much space is it configured to be able to take up - if in use).
Pagefile (is it fixed size, has max/min, or is controlled by Windows).

If you've enabled Hibernation, then its file will take up space equal to your memory size.

Most people have it set up to Hide System Files and that might _MIGHT_ be the issue. Not sure. Other posts might be more helpful. You can check to see if anything is hidden or if you have I.E. files that are or were emptied. You could have a lot of cached images, etc. You might also have it set up to do a Disk Clean to take stuff and put it places, etc. Not sure.

Drive C:
capacity: 7.81GB
Free Space: 647MB
% Free: 8%
Fault Tolerence: No


How can check to see what happened to most of my free space?? I did 'Disk Cleanup' and didn't do much.

Freestone, I have 'Hibernation' disabled.

feylin, the only files/folders I have hidden are system files/folders.

You never answered my System Restore or page file questions. You'lll have to unhide system files/folders to be able to see what's using the space - but your stated problem was that free space dropped from 1.5GB to 647MB. If you haven't installed stuff, or created large files deliberately or downloaded stuff, then some process you are not aware of must have taken the space. System Restore, if enabled will fill up increasing amounts of space until it reaches the limit you set. Page file can get bigger if not set to definite size (min/max the same). Also, your temporary internet files cache will continue growing until you clear it - but running disk cleanup should have sorted that.

might help to discover the space hogs - but it won't identify the cause. You could try running a search for whole drive using the last updated filter (only get files updated in last few days) - put them in size order and see if anything stands out.

Alright, good. Now look below that, you will see bars with drive listings on them. Find Drive 0, and tell me if there is any unallocated space. If there is, please tell me. If there is not, it's a file that is specific to your computer. I would either have to be at your computer, or have remote access. Sorry if I couldn't help you.

feylin, inadverntaly you were right about IE and hidden folders. But I came across it a different way. I tried to De-Frag my drive C: but it says that I need more free space allocated for optimum performace, so I did an analze and noticed that in my 'Temp Internet Files' more then 312MB were being used. So I followed the folder path and noticed that all video's, heavy-file images were stored in hidden folders. Well, deleted it all, and lo-and-behold got back like 3.87GB of free space.

Thanks to everyone else that helped me also. You're ideas also helped in some ways.
