missing ntoskrnl error

does anyone have a fairly easy way to fix this problem?
open to all suggestions or links

Disk I/O error: status 00001001

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt; < window 2000 root > \ system 32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Start with a chkdsk /r of the drive with recovery console, then use Method #3:

it seems that resolution is for Windows XP, however the system in question has Windows 2000 professional. is the solution the same?

It is identical. To be fancy about it, Microsoft offers the Recovery Console from XP in a different wrapper called: The Windows 2000 Registry Repair Kit, and it would be worth your time to obtain it:
