Hi there!

The multimedia icon (and speaker in system tray) is missing. I'm using 98SE and my sound and everything works, just the icon is missing.

Any ideas? I looked at the control.ini and the ctl file is NOT listed in the DON'T LOAD section.

Thanks!

Probably too trivial, but anyway:

Return to Control Panel, double-click on the Add & Remove Programs icon. Choose the Windows Setup tab. Select Multimedia from the list and double-click on it. From the next screen, make certain Volume Control is checked on the list of items to install. Click OK.

Hope this helps

Using System File checker, extract
mmsys.cpl to Windows\system

Rob,

What happens if you go to Start>Run, and type sndvol32.exe?

Go to Start>Run, and type msconfig, click the startup tab and make sure systray is checked.

Hello, MrBreeze.

Have you done as per instructions given above? If yes, and the result is still negative, I would like to propose one strange instance which might lead to this, but was not principally for win98x.

Could you use Start | Find to check the file krnl386.exe within your c:\windows (including subdirectories) and post back the finding. If you find multiple krnl386.exe or mislocated krnl386.exe, you may have problem. But cannot say for sure. Would like to see your finding first. But, it would be rare and I don't think a priori it should happen to your system.

Hi Rob, if you still don't have your volumn control speaker icon, try this: Open Control Panel, double-click on Multimedia and on Audio tab of Multimedia Properties dialog box, select "Show volumn control on the Taskbar" and click OK. You should then have what you are looking for.

Duchess,

I hate to ask this. But has anybody looked at the title of this thread??

"Missing Multimedia Icon in Control Panel"
I therefore would and did assume that is not an option.
And because we haven't heard back, I bet this is resolved.

reghakr,
LOL I couldn't resist. Sorry. But that dumb remark? No way.

Yes, it's resolved. It was a program installed for a new dvd drive that changed it. I reinstalled that program and VOILA! It reappeared. I don't know how it disappeared and don't know how it came back, but I ain't asking no questions :)

Thanks for all of the responses!
