I have Office 2000. I was using it not long ago while I had a lot of things open and it started acting flaky, everything running very slowly and the cursor jumping around. I ended up having to Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of it.

When I started again, my Edit menu was under my File menu - you have to click on file, and edit is the first option, with all its categories available to its right. In addition, my Format menu was gone, replaced by what looked like a separator.

I have since tried everything up to uninstalling and reinstalling, but I can't get my menu to look right. It's always like that. Does anyone know how I can get my Edit in the right place and my Format back?

Hi kaelcarp,

Have you tried resetting the menu?

Under Tools > Customize > Toolbars tab, scroll down and select "Menu Bar", then click on the Reset button.

Enjoy,
Tony

kaelcarp,
You didn't say whether the problem was with Word, Excel or other Office applications. The answer will vary accordingly.

For Excel, consider renaming your *.xlb toolbar file to *.old. Do this while Excel is not running. This file is frequently corrupted. After renaming, a new copy to factory specs will be created the next time Excel launches. Mine is called Excel.xlb and is located in my C:\Documents and Settings\my Windows log-on name\Application data\Microsoft\Excel folder.

You may also want to launch Excel with the RegServer option to reset the registry settings to factory specs. You do this from the Start....Run command line. On my computer, the command looks like "C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" /RegServer

Please remove all files from your XLSTART folder. These files are automatically loaded when Excel launches, and may be looking for something that doesn't exist. On my computer, this folder is located in my C:\Documents and Settings\my Windows log-on name\Application data\Microsoft\Excel folder. You may also have files opened up in the location specified in your Tools...Options...General menu item in the field "At start-up, open all files in"

Next, turn all add-ins off. You do this from the Tools...Add-ins menu item by unchecking all the checkboxes.

For Word, the recommended actions are similar: find and rename your Normal.dot template to Normal.old and dump your registry key. Do this while Word is not running. Instructions are given here: Brad

byundt,

Worked like a charm. Thanks a lot. It was Excel, by the way. I can't believe I managed to forget to say that.
