Help! My icons in my start menu are gone, (Run, Help, Settings, Documents, Favorites, Programs). Also a majority of my program icons in my Start->Programs folder are all set to the generic icon (the one with the picture of the white window and blue titlebar). My desktop icons are all there and ok. Also, some of my dialog box icons are gone (the generic file type icon is showed, the one with the pic of the white document with the MS logo on it). I've tried deleting my icon cache, that doesn't work, and my shell32.exe file is 1,400,832 bytes. I am using windows 98. Please help me!

Just a suggestion.

If the Icons are gone/changed, but they still do what they are supposed to do when you click them (do they?), you could try tweakui (look at the earlier post about 'properties with right click').

It has an Icon repair facility too.

what OS are you running?
Windows 98 allows you to restore your pc to a time in the past where your pc was fine.
start - shut down-choose start in MS-DOS
at c:\windows "type" scanreg
choose view backup
choose a date where you your pc was fine and restore the registry.
hope it works for you.

sounds to me like you changed the name of a root type directory and it can't find any targets.

Make sure your c:\windows and c:\program files directories are named properly (with no extra spaces or anything.).

Failing that your start menu icons are in:
c:\windows\start menu\programs look there and right click on the generic ones, go to properties and tell it to "find target"
