I have office 97 and somehow I am missing a font . I know this becuase everytime I click on Word or Excel to open it, I get a notice advising me I am missing a font. In fact it is the Tacoma font. I tried reloading the program on my computer and that didn't work - what else do I do?

An all too common problem. First open the fonts applet in the control panel. Make sure that the SYSTEM attribute has not been lost for the fonts folder by clicking on FILE and see if the option INSTALL NEW FONT is listed. If not listed add the SYSTEM attribute back to the fonts directory using the attib +s command in a DOS screen. You will need to restart you system afterwards.

If the option is still listed check if the Tahoma.ttf and Tahomabd.ttf files are in your FONTS directory. If so copy the files out to another location first.

Then delete the files from the FONTS diretory and then try to reinstall (not just copy) the fonts from the FONTS applet in the control panel.

I have found in several instances that if Windows says the fonts are still installed , even though you have eliminated them from the fonts directory, that the font is still being seen in the registry. In those instances I had to delete the references to the Tahoma font in the registry before I could install the font correctly.

If someone has an easier method of handling this issue I would be interested in your comments. joegz
