I have a disk that I keep some business files on and Monday they were all there and today when I look on the disk half of them are gone. They Were mostly excel files on a 3.5 floppy. There are still some left on there but not all there. Anyone have any ideas as to what may have happen and maybe if I can get them back????? Thanks

It sounds like the disk may have become corrupt. Try running a scandisk on the floppy, this may help to retrieve some of the files. Or, better yet if you have a copy of norton utilities you can run unerase wizard (I think that is the name as I don't have it on the current machine).

I hope this helps
fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I am interested in Mining Software, as well as Genetic Algorithms.

Thanks for the tip...will let you know what happens.....

You know what probably happened, the FAT became corrupt on the floppy (tends to happen quite often) and the computer didn't know what files where on the disk, or how to find them. The FAT (file allocation table) is a road map for your computer. It tells your computer what is located on the disk and where it is on the disk. Your hard drive also has an FAT.

I would recomend not backing anything important up on to floppies as the are not reliable for long term storage. They are excellent for transproting files from one machine to another. I recomend using tape back up (expensive), zip drive (not bad if you get a portable unit) or cd burner ( the best solution).

Regards,
fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I am interested in Mining Software, as well as Genetic Algorithms.
